How to plan a winter wedding – our top tips

Top
Winter weddings are growing in popularity thanks to atmospheric venues with log fires, snow-sprinkled photographs and hearty food, and can be as equally breathtaking as a summer celebration. Here, we share our top tips for planning your winter nuptials.

Reasons to get married in winter

While a British summer can be quite unpredictable weather-wise, winter doesn’t usually hold many surprises and guests will be expecting cold weather, removing any stress on the bride and groom to put contingency plans in place. Add to this the chance of a magical dusting of snow and your wedding takes on a whole new dimension.

Winter themed wedding

While a winter wedding doesn’t necessarily mean a Christmas wedding, many venues will have festive décor in place that can be incorporated into your theme, and of course dark winter evenings will create the loveliest atmosphere. When decorating your venue from scratch, however, a winter theme has endless possibilities.

Winter wedding decorations

A white theme works well for a winter wedding and adding warm, vibrant finishing touches, for example in floral displays and bridesmaids dresses, will create the perfect atmosphere. Seasonal topiary will help to add a winter wonderland feel to your venue and in the likely event that there will be no snow, hiring a snow machine will bring gasps of awe and wonder from all your guests. Or consider dressing the exterior of your venue with snow covered Christmas trees that can be decorated in jewel-rich colours, with a sleigh for the perfect festive element. A fairy light backdrop will provide the perfect setting for romantic wedding photography, so discuss with your venue and photographer where the best place for an LED curtain backdrop will be.

Winter wedding food ideas

Guests at winter weddings will appreciate warming, comfort food and there is no better winter wedding food than a traditional, three course roast. Start with a hearty French onion soup, followed by fillet of pork with roasted vegetables and then finish with liqueur tarts or homemade tiramisu. With a fine dining menu that can be bespoke tailored to suit you and your guests, the choice is yours. Alternatively, for evening guests, an old fashioned hog roast will hit the mark on a chilly winter’s night.

Keep your guests warm and dry

Plan an overspill area where guests can go for a quiet sit down away from the music and entertainment in the main venue. Providing a space where (older) guests can take a break will be appreciated and marquee hire offers the perfect solution. If your venue is unable to accommodate a large wedding marquee, pagoda marquee hire offers a great alternative. Available in a variety of sizes, pagoda marquees can be used individually or joined together to create a more spacious area. And, of course, winter wedding guests need to be warm, so effective marquee heating is a must.
